Strange Scholarships

High school students know that scholarships are awarded for good grades and great athletic ability. They likely know that there are also financial awards for students with specific majors. However, if students look beyond the normal categories for financial aid, they will find some strange scholarships for which they may be eligible.

Strange scholarships are awarded for students who are above average height. The Tall Clubs International (TCI) Student Scholarship provides up to $1,000 and is awarded to students under the age of 21 who will be attending their first year of college. Female students for this award have to be at least 5’10″. Male students have to be at least 6’2″. Students should contact their local TCI Member Club to apply for the scholarship.

The Little People of America (LPA) Scholarship is awarded to members of LPA who have been diagnosed with dwarfism. Other students who are diagnosed with dwarfism or have a disability may also apply for this scholarship. Interested students should contact their local LPA office for an application. Awards for this scholarship range from $250 to $1,000.

The first-place winner of the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Additional scholarships will be awarded to the second, third and fourth place winners in amounts ranging from $500 to $1,000. This award is available to high school seniors. Students register for the contest at the chamber of commerce in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Contest cannot be left off the list of strange scholarships. The student and his or her prom date have to create their outfits from duct tape. The male and female of the first place couple win $5,000 each. The second place couple gets $3,000 each, and third place winners each get $2,000. Additional awards of $500 will be given to runners up. Students have to be 14 or older to enter the contest. In order to participate, students must become a member of the Duck Tape Clubâ„¢ and submit pictures of their duct tape attire. Specific rules for the contest are listed on the Duckbrand.com web site.

The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award is another financial aid opportunity that belongs on a strange scholarships list. This $7,500 award is given to high school students who excel in academics, athletics, leadership and community service. The students also have to consume milk as part of their daily routine.
